The practice of using the wet towel for pre-dining washing and refreshing began around the 5th century B.C. The ancient Egyptians used their hands for dining, while Romans and Greeks used a bath-size towel to clean their hands before and after eating. Later, Muromachi-period Japanese adopted the practice of cleaning the body and refreshing, using a smaller towel similar to the pre-moistened towels used by today’s Japanese hotels and tea house.

Originating in Japan, “Oshibori” are pre-moistened, hot or cold hand towels which are offered by most restaurants. They are used to clean one's hands or face before eating, and have a long been tradition in Japan. Many successful restaurants around the world now offer Oshibori to their patrons, before and after their meals, as a courtesy service and symbol of their commitment to excellence.
